About Year 1

Welcome to Class 1.  Miss O'Kell is the class teacher of the 30 children in Year 1 Monday to Thursday.  Mrs Sheahan is the class teacher on a Friday.  Our Teaching Assistants are Mrs. Ellison Ms Ronan and Miss Hewit  who each work at various times of the week in our classroom to support our learning.

Our class is a friendly, happy place to learn.  We have a cloakroom area and toilets nearby, we have areas in our class for construction, graphics, computing, sand, reading, Maths and English.  We also have lots of interesting classroom displays to support our learning.

Each day, two children are chosen to be the helpers for the class.  This means they are responsible for any jobs, they give out fruit at break time and always hold the doors open for the rest of the class as they move around school.  We choose our lunch time option at the end of the day for the following day.  Other children are also chosen each morning to display the date and weather and various other jobs.  We love taking on responsibility and becoming helpful members of our school community!

Each day we begin our morning with a class prayer. We do Read Write Inc to help us with our reading and writing and also celebrate Collective Worship either in class or in the hall with other classes.  We have busy days which help us to learn to be better readers, writers and mathematicians.  Our topics help us to develop knowledge and skills in other subject areas.  We particularly love PE which is taught by Mr. Sheahan on Friday’s and Miss O'Kell on Wednesdays. We also have a dedicated lesson each week of PSHCE which helps us to develop our personal, social, health and citizenship education.

We have reading books to take home twice a week and spellings to learn weekly.  Homework is half termly and we are allowed to loan a library book each week from our wonderful school library.  We enjoy school trips to support our learning but the highlight of our week is when we are chosen to be the Star of the Week and Handwriter of the Week!!  Each Friday the superstar is named and is allowed to take our class superstar teddy home.  The superstar is then presented with a special “Star of the Week” certificate in our Celebration Assembly on a Friday.  It is a very special award!

We hope you have enjoyed reading about Class 1 and we are sure you will agree it is a great place to be.
